Miniaceoliva sericea

General description:

Distribution: Western Indo-Pacific realm. Central Indo-Pacific realm. Tropical Southwestern Pacific province (New Caledonia). Sunda Shelf province. Java Transitional province (S Sumatra, Indonesia). Western Coral Triangle province (Philippines). Eastern Coral Triangle province (Solomon Islands). From the Maldive Islands and Sri Lanka eastwards to Southeast Asia, Indonesia and Samoa (Sterba, 2004).

One of the largest and heaviest Olividae known, with shells reaching a maximum length of over 10 cm. It is considered to be a valid species by all contemporary authors but is often listed as Oliva textilina Lamarck, 1811 (a junior synonym) in older literature.

Original description(s):

"O. Albido cinerea, lineis punctatis flexuosis subreticulata; fasciis duabus fuscis characteribus inscriptis; callo canalis prominente. Grande et belle olive d'un aspect grisâtre, moiré et comme satiné. Elle offre sur un fond blanc bàtre quantité de linéoles ponctuées, en zigzag, irrégulières, diversement serrées; et deux bandes transverses, plus ou moins marquées, composées de petites lignes brunes, serrées en zigzag, et qui ressemblent à des caractères d'écriture. A l'entrée du canal de la spire, on voit une callosité fort éminente. La longueur de cette coquille est d'environ 73 millimètres. Elle varie dans ses teintes; mais les caractères de l'espèce se retrouvent à peu près les mêmes dans ses variétés.". "Shell oblong fusiform; spire flatly conical; whorls rounded, callous; colour yellowish white, with small red-brown spots and two interrupted letter-like bands; columellar plaits prominent, continued nearly the whole length; interior of the aperture and columella cream-coloured; basal folds broad and raised.". "O. Castaneo-fulva, maculis albis trigonis minimis et creberrimis picta; ore albo. Cette olive devient assez grande, et semble, par ses rapports, tenir le milieu entré l'espèce précédente et celle qui suit. Elle est cylindracée, d'un marron roussâtre, et ornée d'une multitude de très-petites taches blanches et trigones. Elle est blanche à son ouverture. La longueur des plus grands individus est de 64 millimètres.". Recent. No locality given.
