Nomenclature

Genus: AmericolivaUnranked: Americoliva - Western Atlantic species
SUMMARY
A medium sized Americoliva, endemic to Brazil. Apparently, it is the only Americoliva penetrating the temperate waters of Eastern South America. At present, three poorly defined subspecies are recognised:
Subspecies | Distribution |
---|---|
A. c. circinata (Marrat, 1871) |
Tropical Atlantic realm. Tropical Southwestern Atlantic province. Bahia State, Brazil. RV 3033. Brazil, Bahia, Salvador; depth 8 m. Scale bar is 1 cm. |
A. c. tostesi (Petuch, 1987) |
Temperate South America realm. Warm Temperate Southwestern Atlantic province. Sao Paulo State-Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. Figure wanted. |
A. c. jorioi (Petuch, 2013) |
Tropical Atlantic realm. Tropical Southwestern Atlantic province. Rio Grande do Norte State, Ceará State, Brazil. Figure coming |
The three subspecies are treated here as valid. Their status, however, should be investigated as differences in shell morphology are minor and distribution patterns are still hardly known. The first major issue is that the provenance of Marrat's type material is unknwn. It is assumed in literature that is is from (the vicinity) of Bahia State, Brazil.
