SUMMARY
Distribution: Temperate Northern Pacific realm, Warm Temperate Northeast Pacific province. Cortezian ecoregion (Sea of Cortez). Tropical Eastern Pacific realm. Tropical East Pacific province. Panama Bight ecoregion (Panama).

Specimens from southeast Baja California Sur, Mexico (Cortezian ecoregion) are commonly assigned to Oliva melchersi Menke, 1851, (either as a subspecies or as a local variety). Apart from the rather arbitrary assignation (the taxon was described without figure), the differences in shell morphology are minor.

Dark brown coloured specimens, which occur uncommonly among regularly coloured specimens, have been named Oliva oniska Duclos, 1844, Oliva fuscata Marrat, 1871, and Oliva spicata var. perfecta Johnson, 1911.
