It is recognized as a valid species by all contemporary authors.
"O. Cylindracea, reticulo tenui fulvo colorata; fasciis characterum fuscorum, obsoletis; spirâ brevi; ore caerulescente. Celle olive n'est point rare dans les collections, et cependant je n'en connois de figure que dans l'Encyclopédie. Elle est plus ou moins foncée en couleur selou que le réseau fin et d'un fauve brun qui la couvre est plus ou moins apparent. Ses deux zones transverses, composées de traits bruns, presqu'en forme de lettres, sont aussi plus ou moins exprimées selon les individus. Les plus grands n'ont que 47 millimètres.". "Shell of medium size for genus, heavy, thickened, squat and rotund, with straight sides; spire flattened, truncated; color yellow-tan to greenish, overlaid with obscuring pattern of brown cloudings and longitudinal zig-zag lines; some specimens with two bands of dark brown zig-zags encircling the body whorl; interior of aperture white; columellar area white with 15 to 17 small, rounded plicae. Holotype: Length 45 mm, width 22 mm, trawled by commercial shrimpers from 30 meters depth off Punto Fijo, Paraguana Peninsula, Gulf of Venezuela, Venezuela.".
"Shell solid, rather heavy, polished, with the greatest width just above the mid region. Ground color somewhat grayish, to reddish-brown, overlaid with fine and numerous reddish brown checks, intensified above and below the mid area to indicate two somewhat obscure bands. The general appearance of the shell is a decided reddish brown, a few specimens only retaining a grayish cast. Whorls 7to 7 1/2. Spire short, descending slightly to the sixth whorl, the last whorl being formed along the margin of the preceding whorl. Parietal wall thinly glazed with fairly strong basal plications. Mid-parietal plications fairly strong, short and developed to near the superior portion of the aperture. Aperture long and narrow, flaring slightly at the base. Palatal lip thick. Sculpture of only exceedingly fine growth lines. Suture deeply channeled. Interior of aperture a flat white. Length [holotype] 40.2 Width 16.3 Aperture 36.8x2.8 mm.". Recent. "Shell rather short and stout, its greatest diameter being near the shoulder; spire low, the suture being deeply channeled; outer lip heavy; columella having a strong white callus extending up for two-thirds of the length of the aperture, where it thins out; columellar plications numerous and distinct but not strong. The ground color is ashy yellow, becoming darker below, overlaid with a close faint reticulation of reddish brown. There are two faint bands of darker reticulations on the outside whorl and splashes and lines of this dark color under the suture. The interior is purplish; the columella is a little lighter colored. Length, 32; diameter,15 mm. A rather dull and inconspicuous species, the most cylindrical of the Antillean forms and perhaps nearest to O. litterata Lamarck.". Recent. Mayaguez Harbor, Porto Rico.
