Annulatoliva
"Shells medium sized for genus, thickened, with pronounced shoulders; some varieties coniform; spires elevated; colors generally shades of yellow, salmon-pink, or light tan, often overlaid with cloudings of purple, tan, or pinkish-brown; triangle or netted pattern absent from most species".
Type species by original designation: Oliva annulata Gmelin, 1791. The type species was described as Voluta annulata Gmelin, 1791. Tursch & Greifeneder stated: “... cannot be identified and is a nomen dubium (Tursch, Duchamps & Greifeneder, 1994). The name has been used for three distinct species.”. The three species belonging to this species-complex were discussed in depth by Tursch, Germain & Greifeneder (1986). Petuch & Sargent (1986: Pl. 3 figs. 9-10) illustrated two specimens from Culion Leper Colony, Palawan Island, Philippines, as belonging to their Oliva annulata Gmelin. These two specimens clearly belong to the Central and Western Indo-Pacific species well documented as being Porphyria amethystina Röding (1798: 35), one of the three species mentioned by Tursch & Greifeneder and discussed by Tursch, Germain & Greifeneder (see above). The type designation should therefore be emended accordingly. Type species now fixed (under Article 70.3 of the Code) as Porphyria amethystina Röding, 1798, misidentified as Oliva annulata Gmelin, 1791, in the original designation by Petuch & Sargent (1986).
This highly recogniseable taxon is already documented from the early Miocene and should be regarded as a full genus, not as a subgenus of Oliva Bruguière, 1789.
A genus of medium-siced species known from the Central Indo-Pacific realm, the Western Indo-Pacific realm, and the Eastern Indo-Pacific realm. The earliest records are from the Miocene of Vanuatu and Fiji.
The type species is Porphyria amethystina Röding, 1798 (see below).
