Agaronia ispidula (Linnaeus, 1758)

Distribution: Miocene. Miocene of the Loire Basin, France. Miocene of the Aquitaine Basin, France. Aquitanian-Burdigalian. Pliocene. "Astian"?

A very common species in the Miocene of the Aquitaine Basin, France. Uncommon in the Miocene of the Loire Basin, France. It possibly persisted into the Pliocene of Italy (Zanclean-Piacenzian) before becoming extinct.

A lectotype and two paralectotypes are present in the Linnean shell collection (The Linnean Society of London). The lectotype (selected by Olsson & Dance, 1966: Pl. 19 fig. 3) is the common Miocene Agaronia known from the Burdigalian of France, described later as Oliva plicaria Lamarck, 1811. The other two specimens in the Linnean collection represent specimens of two extant species: Jaspidella jaspidea (Gmelin, 1791) and Agaronia propatula (Conrad, 1849). Several syntypes (now paralectotypes) in UUZM (Wallin, 2001).

The species appears to be the precursor of the extant Agaronia hiatula (Gmelin, 1791), a well-known West-African (West African Transitional province) species and type of the genus.
