Musteloliva mustelina mustelina

General description:

Distribution: Temperate Northern Pacific realm. Warm Temperate Northwest Pacific province (SE Japan). Central Indo-Pacific realm. Java Transitional province. Sunda Shelf province (Vietnam). South China Sea province (SW Taiwan). Western Coral Triangle province. Eastern Philippines ecoregion (Philippines).

Pale specimens, without the conspicuous longitudinal zigzag markings on the shell, from off SW Taiwan have been named Oliva mustelina f. lanberti Bert, 1984. As this form name was introduced after 1961, it has no standing under the ICZN code. Such specimens were named Oliva mustelina inornata Marrat, 1870, by Petuch & Sargent (1986: 104, Pl. 16 figs. 19-20). Oliva inornata Marrat, 1871, however, seems to involve a different taxon.

Risk statement:

The species has demonstrated to implicate food poisoning in Tawan, in 2002 (Hwang et al., 2003).

Oliva mucronalis

General description:

Introduced as a replacement name for Oliva mucronata Marrat, 1871, not Oliva mucronata Orbigny, 1850 (a species from the Eocene of France). However, the description and figure given by Petuch & Sargent do not match Marrat's taxon but another small Indo-pacific species (see figure below).

Oliva mustelina

"O. Cylindrica, albida; lineis fusco -rufis flexuosis longitudinalibus; spire brevi; ore violaceo. Cette olive paroît avoir des rapports avec la variété de l'olive glandiforme; mais son ouverture d'un beau violet, et sa forme plus cylindrique, ainsi que sa coloration, l'en distinguent. Sa longueur est de 23 à 24 millimètres.". Refers to Lister, 1688: Pl. 731 fig. 20 [listed as Pl. 20 fig. 731]. Recent. No locality given.

Taxonomy:

This was a valid species for Sterba (2004).

"Cylindraceo-subconica, fulvescens, lineis rubris angulatim undulatis notata; spira, depressa; anfractibus callosis, apice mucronato, balteo subcarinato, flammulato; columella tenuiter omnino plicata, plicis calli antici latis concoloribus; apertura intus sordide alba.". Recent. Unknown locality.

Type material:

Kaicher (1988: card 5256) figured a syntype MCML.

Taxonomy:

Junior primary homonym of Oliva mucronata Orbigny, 1850.

This was a junior synonym of Oliva athenia Duclos, 1840, for Sterba (2004).

Porphyria labradorensis

No formal description. Refers to Lister, 1688: Pl. 731 fig. 20.

Taxonomy:

This is a senior objective synonym of Oliva mustelina Lamarck, 1811, as it refers to the same figure in Lister. It has, however, never been used for the species under discussion and should therefore be considered to be a nomen oblitum.

Original description(s):

"Glossy and cylindrically oblong shell with a pointed apex, spire depressed with callosity, the suture deep in a narrow groove, long body whorI of more than nine tenth (9/10) of the shell height, numerous fine columellar folds along the length of inner lip in white, fasciole also white, inside of the aperture purple, lip thick and white, anterior canal slightly widened. Ground color light brown with Iivid grey in vertical fine lines or stripes but paler toward the lip, instead as seen in typical zigzag patterns of Oliva mustelina Lamarck.". Recent. SW coast of Taiwan near Tainan.

Type material:

"Holotype" Taiwan Museum, Taipei, Taiwan. "Paratypes" MSNG and Bert private collection. As this form name was introduced after 1961, it has no standing under the ICZN code.
