Baryspira albocallosa

General description:

Distribution: Temperate Northern Pacific realm. Warm Temperate Northwest Pacific province (Southeast Japan).

RV 2123a. Japan, Nagasaki, trawled offshore, 75-100 m. Scale bar is 1 cm.

RV 0563. Japan, Honshu, Aichi Prefecture, Mikawa Province, Mikawa. Scale bar is 1 cm.

The Pliocene Ancilla okawai Yokoyama, 1923, occurring in the same region, seems to be the precursor of the current species. It is extremely similar in shell shape but its operculum is unknown. However, the taxon is here regarded as a junior synonym.

"Testa ovato-oblonga, fulvescente-carnea, lineolis elevatis transversis exilibus striisque incrementi confertissimis subtilissime sculpta; spira, apice acuminato albido excepto, callo copioso fulvo, inferne linea alba marginato, obtecta; basis cingulis duobus instructa, quorum superior albus, paullo depressus utrinque sulco terminatus, inferior fuscus, laevis, altere duplofere latior, costaspirali obtusabipartitus; apertura 2/3 totius testae longitudinis subaequans; labrum inferne denticulo brevi armatum; columella callosa, perparum sinuosa; callus columellaris albus, infernefuniculum sulcaturn et tortum formans, superne per totam ferefaciem ventralem spirae expansus. Type material:

Specimen illustrated by Lischke (1874: Pl. 2 figs. 24-25) in LMAD/LÖB100265a (illustrated by Higo, Callomon & Goto, 2001: 90).

Taxonomy:

Lischke failed to illustrate the species at date of introduction of the taxon. It was figured, however, by Lischke one year later (1874: Pl. 2 figs. 24-25).

The specimens figured by Kaicher (1982: card 3431), Okutani (2000), and Nishi et al. (2012: Pl. 48 fig. 3) are the slender morph of this species. On the other hand, the specimen figured by Kaicher (1982: card 3438) as Amalda urashima (Taki) does involve the present species.

The specific epithet "albicallosa" as given by authors (Sterba, 2001), is a spelling error.

"The shell is subfusiform inclining to cylindrical, The spire is very short, blunt at apex and wholly covered with a callus which is provided with several ﬁne spiral grooves. The callus also covers he upper portion of the body-whorl, and in front it comes down to cover the upper part of the inner lip. The body-whorl is ﬁnely spirally striate and where it meets the spire is a shallow excavation. Near the base there are two spiral bands one above the other, the upper being narrower and bounded by a groove on both sides, while the lower is one and a half times to twice as broad and has a ridge in its middle. The base below the lower band is smooth and separated by a deep and broad valley from the lower portion of the inner lip which at this place shows three longitudinal grooves decreasing in size toward inside. Aperture long, occupying more than seven-tenths of the shell-height. Outer lip thin. Canal broad and short. Height 40 millim. Díameter 18 millim. Apertural length 28 ınillim. The younger forms are more slender, one of such measuring 22 millim. in height, 9 millim. in diameter and 15.5 millim. in apertural length.". Pliocene. Dainichi, Totomi, Japan.

Taxonomy:

This may be the direct precursor of the extant Ancillaria albocallosa Lischke, 1873. However, it seems safe to separate the two until more information becomes available.
