General description:

Distribution: Central Indo-Pacific realm. Java Transitional province (Indonesia. SW Java, Indonesia, mainly the Pangandaran-Cilacap region).

Paratype RV 2327a. Indonesia, Java, Cilacap. Scale bar is 1 cm.

Look alikes:

This species is readily identified by its dark chocolate colored suprasutural collar which is absent in all Central Indo-West Pacific Utriculina, which may be similar.

The closest relative of this species seems to be the Miocene Oliva subulata var. odengensis Martin, 1895, which is also recorded from Java, Indonesia. That species may be the ancestor of the current extant species.

Oliva subulata

General description:

Oostingh (1938: 114, Pl. 7 figs. 139-142) listed and illustrated Oliva (Anazola) subulata Lamarck, from the Pliocene of Java, Indonesia. Oostingh's figures represent at least two distinct species and his figure 142 is extremely similar to extant species known from Java and Bali, Indonesia.

Oostingh's figure 142 originates from Tjimandiri [Cimandiri], Bakti Jaya, West-Java, Indonesia, and was listed as belonging to forma odengensis [see Oliva subulata var. odengensis Martin, 1895].

Original description(s):

"Dextral solid shell, of maximum height of about 40mm and a height/diameter ratio of about 2.8. Spire tall and conical, with a slightly concave profile and featuring a spiral callus occupying about half the height of each whorl. Widest band of the body whorl a uniform dark-orange brown, sometimes with a purplish tinge intensifying towards the suture. This coloration is continuous along the spire, contrasting with the orange-brown spiral callus. Thin wash of white callus present on the columellar side of the aperture close to the filament channel. Just above the postfasciole, a thin pale band is discernible. The postfasciole and the fasciole are of the same colour and are considerably paler than the main part of the body whorl, with the former featuring a few very fine spiral threads and numerous darker growth striae which do not extend upon the fasciole. The belt and the base of the columellar callosity are beige. Outer lip thin, with its outline recurved, and, at the proximity of the siphonal canal, almost parallel with the columellar side of the aperture.".

Original description(s):

"Shell relatively large, strong and elongated. About 5 whorls, body whorl about 9/10 of total length of shell. Columella callus strongly developed, clearly visible from the base of the shell to the upper part of the aperture where it is connected to a band of callus which runs just above the suture. Columella with 6 or 7 strong plications. Callus above suture chocolate brown and covering more than half of the spire-whorls. Under magnification a fine pattern of longitudinal growth-striae can be seen. Color light brown, fasciolar band slightly lighter, basal zone darker. A dirty white band just above the fasciolar band. Dark brown callus above suture conspicious. Aperture white, extreme inner lip brown.". Recent, Indonesia, Java, Cilacap.
