Fossil species are recognised from as early as the Chattian (Upper Oligocene) of the Aquitaine Basin, France.
Americoliva dufresnei (Basterot, 1825), the probable precursor of the extant type species, is very common in the Aquitanian and Burdigalian (Miocene) of the Aquitaine Basin, France.
